Play Checkers
Play checkers, also known as draughts, online against the computer or a friend! You can customize the look of the game pieces and the size of the gameboard. Play Play Checkers game online on your mobile phone, tablet or computer.
How To Play
Use the mouse or touch the screen to play.
- Board Setup:
- Set up the checkers board, which consists of an 8x8 grid of squares.
- Place the board between the two players, with a dark square in the lower-left corner for each player.
- Each player starts with 12 pieces, typically round discs, of the same color (usually red and black).
- Movement Rules:
- The game is played on the dark squares of the board, diagonally.
- Each player can only move their pieces forward, towards the opponent's side of the board.
- Regular moves involve moving a piece one square diagonally forward to an empty adjacent square.
- Pieces can never move or capture backward unless they become a king (explained later).
- Capturing is optional but mandatory if an opportunity arises.
- Capturing:
- If a player's piece is adjacent to an opponent's piece and there is an empty square immediately beyond it, the player can jump over the opponent's piece and capture it.
- Multiple captures can be made in a single turn if they are in a continuous diagonal line.
- When a piece makes a capturing move, it continues capturing as long as there are valid opportunities on the board.
- After making a capturing move, the capturing piece can choose to continue capturing with the same piece or stop and end its turn.
- Kinging:
- When a player's piece reaches the farthest row on the opponent's side of the board, it is crowned as a "king."
- A king has additional movement abilities. It can move both forward and backward diagonally, unlike regular pieces that can only move forward.
- A king can also capture both forward and backward diagonally.
- Gameplay:
- The players take turns moving their pieces.
- On your turn, you can move one of your pieces to an adjacent empty square or capture an opponent's piece if possible.
- If a capturing move is available, it must be taken. The capturing move takes priority over regular moves.
- If a piece reaches the last row on the opponent's side, it becomes a king.
- Winning the Game:
- The game ends when one of the following conditions is met:
- One player captures all of their opponent's pieces.
- The opponent cannot make any more moves because their pieces are blocked.
- If a game ends in a draw, it's usually because both players agree, or the same position is repeated three times.
